How We Spent Christmas Holidays in Slovenia

Updated: Jan 15, 2021

We arrived in Ljubljana, Slovenia just before Christmas. The city honestly looked like one big winter wonderland with sparkling lights all around - just take a look at our photos below. First, we grabbed a hot and tasty local snack from the Christmas food market and then it was time for the magnificent castle on the hill. It’s quite an uphill hike so we decided to start easy and take the short cable cart to the top. The castle has some exhibits inside but it’s mostly set up to be admired from the outside. The visit will take you no longer than 2hr.

We came back to the city for the main attraction that is the city’s Christmas Market. We were really impressed by it! The decorations are gorgeous and the atmosphere is family friendly with attractions and food to suit all. Music could be heard all around - we even caught a performance from carol signers in the church right by the market.

We spent all that evening soaking up the Christmas atmosphere with lovely cinnamon and clove smelling mulled wine at hand.

After a good night's sleep we jumped on a coach from Ljubliana coach station to the city of Bled. We got there in less than an hour. As soon as you arrive, the views were jaw dropping. And it only gets better! This time we definitely recommend a brisk hike up the hill to visit Blejski Grad (Bled Castle). It is over a 1000 years old and one of the oldest in Slovenia so it helped us learn a bit about the country’s history and Bled itself which is as we found out a popular holiday resort. The castle sits 130m above the famous Lake Bled and has many spots to admire stunning views of the lake and snowy mountain peaks.

We visited the castle on a Sunday so they had some pretty amusing live performances of sword fighting and line dances. Take a peek below.

We continued our travel adventure by taking an overnight coach to Zagreb, Croatia but more on that in another post :)
